Custom for ALIVE

The Brief

Two custom looks built for movement, sweat, and light. I designed them for the ALIVE tour - Static performing to thousands - and they had to survive a two-hour show every night and still look like they meant something.

Materials and Process

I deconstructed denim and hand-dyed fabrics in the studio, building oversized silhouettes that catch stage light and move with the body rather than against it. The denim was vintage. I mixed the dye in buckets on the studio floor.

Designing for the Stage

Stage costume is a different discipline. The garment has to read from fifty metres away. Seams have to hold through choreography. Fabrics have to breathe under heat. I approached it the same way I approach everything - alone, by hand, with materials that have already lived one life.
